Omaha Hearing School
Karen presented at COOR (1 day conference) on 4/16/07 on "Learn to Talk Around the Clock" - a toolkit developed for children who are hearing impaired. They have found the information helpful for all children with speech and language delays. The kit has great ways to work with families in the natural environment and has activities in places the child is usually at - in the kitchen, playtime, little helper, etc... We purchased toolkits for our home visitors and also planned a follow up session where we put together kits for the home visitors to take with them which included copies of the handouts, and manipulatives and books to help with ideas on how to implement the curriculum (put each kit in one of those extra large ziplocs). We included some other pieces about effective home visiting and titled that follow up workshop "Experience Speaks" which was basically our local staff sharing ideas with each other to become more effective. Our home visitors have been very pleased with the ease of use of this (can pick up and go, and can use for a variety of levels of need using the same kit) and especially like how the curriculum's first behavior that is worked on is more face to face/eye contact between parent and child. I contacted Karen through the Alexander Graham Bell Association.
